Dog-friendly hotel in South Tyrol: a holiday in the Upper Vinschgau
If you are looking for a dog-friendly hotel in South Tyrol, the Ferienhotel Kastellatz is a good address: dogs are welcome with prior registration, and the trails on the Watles and into the Schlinig valley start at the house. Here you can read what applies to your dog, where you can hike with it, and where better not.
Dogs welcome
Please register your dog when you book, in the booking form it takes a single click. The fee is shown there and is also listed on the prices page.
Bring your own blanket
Your dog sleeps best on its familiar blanket, just bring it along, and it will feel at home from the first evening.
Hiking from the front door
You set off from the house without a car: along the paths on the Watles or into the quiet Schlinig valley towards the Sesvenna hut.
House rules for dogs
Dogs are welcome with us after prior registration. The fee is shown during booking and is settled on site; the current amount is on the prices page.
We cannot allow dogs into the wellness and dining areas. How best to organise meals and wellness times with a dog is easiest to agree with the Thöni family when you register your dog.
Hiking with your dog from the house
The house walk to the Plantapatsch hut starts at the Watles valley station: trail no. 3, about 400 m of ascent, easy. With a little more fitness you can continue to the Pfaffen lakes (the full circuit from the house is 10.3 km and takes about 3 hours) or climb the Watles summit at 2,555 m in under three hours, with no scrambling and no exposed sections.
In the Schlinig valley an almost level alpine track leads to the Schlinig alp (from Schlinig about 2 hours, only 130 m of ascent), and the Sesvenna hut is 2 to 2.5 hours from Schlinig. More relaxed still: the legend trail from Burgeis to Marienberg Abbey, about 2 hours, or the circuit around Lake Reschen at 15.3 km with hardly any climbing.
These routes are also manageable with a dog. Plan water, breaks and weather as for any mountain walk; opening times of huts and alps change with the season and should be checked beforehand.
Where you may not take your dog
The Upper Vinschgau is a vast hiking area, but not every nearby destination is open to dogs. Before a day trip, check the rules of the place you are heading for.
Dogs are forbidden in the Swiss National Park, even on a lead. The Uina gorge is also not suitable for dogs on a lead. The Watles, the Schlinig valley and the paths around the house, by contrast, are open to you.
