Hike in the Schlinig valley
Sesvenna hut from Schlinig
The Sesvenna hut is one of the finest hut destinations in the upper Vinschgau: a long, varied path through the Schlinig valley and, at the end, a view into the Sesvenna group. The start is Schlinig, about 10 minutes by car from the Ferienhotel Kastellatz.
You follow marker no. 1 past the Schlinig alp and the Pforzheim hut to the Sesvenna hut. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours for the ascent and a little less for the way back.

Route description
From the car park at the end of Schlinig follow marker no. 1 along a wide track, paved at first, into the valley. It hardly climbs. After just under 40 minutes you reach the Schlinig alp, also called Alp Planbell, at about 1,870 m.
Behind the alp you continue on the forest road towards the head of the valley. Then a hiking trail branches off to the right, a continuation of no. 1, climbing at a moderate gradient through forest and meadows. At the Schwarzwand waterfall the trail becomes steeper, until you reach the old Pforzheimer Hütte by the lake of the same name.
From there you walk almost level across grassy terraces to the Sesvenna hut. The last section is fairly steep. You return the same way. One variant starts in Prämajur: take the Watles cable car to the Plantapatschhütte and then follow the panorama trails no. 8A and no. 8 to the hut.
What to see along the way
First the open Schlinig valley with meadows and larches, then the Schlinig alp. Higher up the Schwarzwand waterfall stands out, later the old Pforzheimer Hütte with its small lake. It was once an Alpine Club hut and is no longer used.
From the Sesvenna hut you look onto the Sesvenna group with three-thousand-metre peaks such as the Föllakopf and Piz Sesvenna. If you have time, walk a little further towards Schlinig Pass; the valley up there is open and wide.
The Schlinig alp is a good intermediate goal if time is too short for the whole hike: an almost level alpine track with refreshments at the end and play stations for children. The alp is not open all year; check dates with the operator.
Practical information and safety
The trail is not difficult, but long, and at altitude it is exposed to the weather. Take rain protection, warm clothing and enough to drink; in early summer there are often still patches of snow, and in autumn it can snow early. Before you set out, check the weather and trail conditions.
The hut is not run all year; opening times, overnight stays and booking are arranged directly with the hut. According to Watles, bus line 277 also runs to Schlinig; timetables are on suedtirolmobil.info. If you want to go further: from the hut the path leads over Schlinig Pass to the Uina Gorge, a long hike with a winter closure.
